Yukon 1000 Canoe and Kayak Race

How to read the results.

There are no fewer that four ways to view the results, and especially the interim results of this race.

The web page

On the results web page, the racers are listed sorted by how far down river their last known location was. Boats which have finished are listed first in the order in which they finished. Boats which have withdrawn are listed after other boats, and boats which have been disqualified are listed last.

In odd situations it is possible for the Spot device to send a message with a time and status but no location. If that happens, the web page will display the location as UNKNOWN, but will give the text version of the last known coordinates.

The results page may show boats that are in the vicinity of Carmacks as being upstream when they are downstream and downstream when they are upstream. The river around there does everything short of going round in circles, so the program gets a bit confused. The affected stretch of the river is from a little way past the downstream end of the island by Tantalus Butte, past the bridge, until you are through the bend after the Nordenskiold River.

Boats are listed first all together, then by category: canoe, kayak, solo, voyageur.

Each result line has a link to see the boat's last known position on google maps.

Google Maps

The "See on Google Maps" link on each results line brings up a new window showing that boat's last known position on Google Maps. No additional software is needed to view these maps.

Auto update in Google Earth

At the top of the results web page is a link "Dynamic updates on Google Earth". If you have Google Earth installed on your computer this link will start Google Earth (unless it is already running) and add an entry to "Temporary Places" called "Yukon 1000 Canoe and Kayak Race Automatic Results". The effect of this is to have icons added to your Google Earth map showing the last known location of all the boats in the race. This information is automatically updated every five minutes. Do not click on this link repeatedly as that will load multiple copies of the results into Google Earth. If you close Google Earth, it is reccomended that you do not save your "Temporary Places" when asked. It is easy enough to click on the "Auto update in Google Earth" link again to restart the Google Earth display.

GE_auto You can open the "Yukon 1000 Canoe and Kayak Race Automatic Results" folder by clicking on the "+" sign next to it. The folder contains a subfolder "Dynamic Results". If you open that folder you will see a list of all the boats in the race with the time of the most recent position data for that boat. You may need to scroll the window down to see the contents of these folders after you open them.
If you can not see a boat on the map, double click on the boat name in the list and the map will center on the boat.

Static Results with history on Google Earth

GEstatic

Near the top of the results web page is a link "Static Results with history on Google Earth". Like the auto update results, this requires that you have Google Earth installed on your computer. If you do, then clicking on this link will start Google Earth unless it is already running and add a folder called "Yukon 1000" to Temporary places. In this folder you will find a subfolder for each boat in the race. These folders each contain a subfolder called "history", and a placemarker for the last know position of each boat.

When initially loaded, the history folders are unchecked. This means that the only placemarkers displayed from the "Yukon 1000" folder are the last known positions of all the boats. As this is static data, Google Earth automatically adjusts its view to include all the current boat positions.

If you want to see the historic positions of a team, check the box next to the history folder for that boat. You may have to click on the "+" sign next to the team name to open the folder to see the hstory subfolder.

If you double click on a boat icon on the main google earth display you will see details about the team and the time the team was at that location.

If you click on a team folder and press the play button at the bottom of the Places panel you will make Google Earth zoom to each historic location for that team in order ending with the current location for the team.

It is strongly suggested that you delete one set of historic race data from Google Earth before adding a more recent set. Having multiple folders called "Yukon 1000" works, but can get a bit confusing.
You delete an old folder by right clicking on the "Yukon 1000" folder and selecting "delete" from the menu that is presented.
